Kay Vinova, MSc

Kay Vinova

I am a nonbinary (they/them) Registered Clinical Psychologist who works with adults (aged 18-65 years) struggling with issues such as trauma, anxiety, depression, disordered eating, emotional dysregulation, religious conflict, and sexual difficulties. I am committed to creating a safe space for clients of all gender identities, sexual orientations, religions, and people with different types of romantic and/or sexual relationships. With each client, I take a collaborative, feminist, and empathetic approach, ensuring I am providing evidence-based treatment. I cater my approach to the client’s needs and find it tremendously rewarding to help clients become aware of their emotional experience and teach new coping strategies.

I am an AASECT certified sex therapist and I work with issues such as low sexual desire, shame around sexual interests, pelvic and sexual pain, difficulties with having orgasms, and erectile issues. I work with clients on an individual basis or in a couples/relationship context to help partners navigate challenging conversations about relationship and sexual needs, heal from attachment ruptures, and build more connection with one another. When working with couples/relationships, I primarily use an Emotionally Focused Therapy approach.

I am a certified EMDRIA therapist who primarily uses an EMDR approach to treat clients who have experienced extensive attachment trauma and/or hold a diagnosis of PTSD. I also have training using approaches such as Mindfulness-based therapies, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders.

I offer general psycho-diagnostic assessments as well as assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder for adults. I am also a WPATH trained clinician, enabling me to complete Trans Health Readiness Assessments for both hormone treatment and gender affirming surgeries.

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Utah and a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology from Acadia University. I have experience working in non-profit, crisis intervention, private practice, and psychiatric hospital settings. I am also an organizing member of the Queer & Trans Therapists of Nova Scotia. I look forward to creating a trusting relationship, a process I find profoundly fulfilling and healing.

Clinical Supervision

Kay Vinova offers clinical supervision for Masters or Doctoral-level Candidate Register Psychologists. Kay centers collaboration with supervisees to help them outline their professional goals, gain more insight into their own process with clients, and confront their biases. Kay feels it’s important to help psychologists early in their career to build confidence in their own perspective and expertise, feel supported through humbling learning experiences, and share successes. Through supervision, supervisees will improve their overall competency in specific treatment modalities, psycho-diagnostic assessment, treatment conceptualization and planning, and professional ethics.

Consultation for Providers

Kay Vinova offers consultation to other mental health therapists and healthcare providers. Specifically, Kay’s expertise is in working with Autism, ADHD, sex and relationship issues, professional ethics, Personality Disorders, Eating Disorders, and how to enhance healthcare providers’ competency in working with 2SLGBTQ+ clients. Whether you are a provider looking for more guidance in treatment planning or your program is looking to become more sex-positive, 2SLGBTQ+ affirming, and/or Neuro-affirming, Kay is happy to provide more direction, teachings, or consultation.
