Sarah Ayton

I’m a queer/genderqueer, neurodivergent, politicized practitioner working through intersectional feminist and trauma-informed lenses. Compassion, curiosity, and experimentation are at the heart of counselling for me; co-creating a space for exploring, digesting, unfurling, and feeling into deeper relationships with ourselves and others. Our minds and bodies are brilliant at building strategies to get by, and sometimes those strategies no longer work for us.

I use an integrative, holistic approach that weaves together somatic and narrative practices with practical skill-building. I help adult clients work through issues related to chronic shame, complex trauma, attachment issues, anxious and depressive symptoms, grief, Neurodivergence (e.g., Autism/ADHD), and gender and sexuality. I am completing ongoing training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Somatic Experiencing.

I come to counselling with a background in community programming, facilitation, and the arts. Outside of Affirming Psychology, I work with local non-profits where I support individuals who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) and coordinate a free gender-affirming gear access program. I take a restorative approach in IPV work to address harm and move towards healing with people who have both experienced and/or used abuse in their relationships. In therapy- complexity, compassion, authenticity, and accountability can all be nurtured in service of building healthier relationships.

To me, this work is about feeding trust in the wisdom of our bodies and getting curious about the stories we tell. We can learn to listen and collaborate, rather than fight against, and move toward personal and collective healing. I look forward to co-creating a therapeutic relationship with you.
